Where is Chu Mom Ray National Park?

About 30km northwest of Kon Tum city, located in Sa Thay and Ngoc Hoi districts, is Chu Mom Ray National Park. This place has the highest biodiversity in the national park system in the country. Chu Mom Ray National Park was formed from Chu Mom Ray Nature Reserve with an area of ​​over 56,000 hectares. This destination is also the only national park in Vietnam bordering two neighboring countries, Laos and Cambodia. Right next to Chu Mom Ray National Park is Virachey National Park of Cambodia and Southeast Ghong Conservation Area of ​​Laos. The total forest area of ​​this area is about 700,000 hectares, forming a large transnational conservation area, of particular importance for biodiversity conservation in Indochina and Southeast Asia.

Introduction to Chu Mom Ray National Park

The total area of ​​Chu Mom Ray special-use forest is about 54,583.59 ha; production forest 1,665.64 ha; buffer zone 188,749 ha. Including communes of Bo Y, Sa Loong (Ngoc Hoi district); Ro Koi, Sa Nhon, Sa Son, Mo Rai, Ya Xier, Sa Thay town (Sa Thay district). This is home to ethnic minority communities, notably the Gia Rai and Ro Mam people.


Chu Mom Ray National Park is located at the Indochina junction, bordering Cambodia to the west and Laos to the northwest. There are the Chu Mom Ray mountain range, many rivers, streams, lakes, rapids, etc., creating great potential to form a wild nature reserve with a typical ecosystem of Southeast Asia.

The flora of Chu Mom Ray National Park is rich and diverse in species and status. According to statistics, there are about 1,534 species here, including 113 rare species belonging to the orchid family, gymnosperm phylum, species of the Dipterocarpaceae family, cycads, golden needles, bamboo pine, rosewood, rosewood, etc.

The fauna of Chu Mom Ray National Park records 718 species, including 115 mammals, 275 birds, 41 reptiles, amphibians, 108 freshwater fish, 179 insects. Of these, 124 are rare species listed in the Red Book of Vietnam and the world, typically: black-cheeked gibbon, Truong Son muntjac, gaur, Indochinese tiger, elephant, bear, leopard, etc., new four-striped false lizard, white-lipped snake, cicada, hornbill, peacock, eagle, etc. 

With its biodiversity and many valuable genetic resources, in 2004, Chu Mom Ray National Park was recognized as an ASEAN heritage by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.


What is Chu Mom Ray National Park?

The pride of the National Park is that it has up to 114 species listed in the Vietnam and World Red Book. In particular, the grassland (Ja Book valley) is the largest in Vietnam (over 9,000 hectares) and has attracted many important ungulates and carnivores such as Truong Son muntjac, wild buffalo, tiger, gaur, wild bison, elephant, bear, leopard... and hundreds of species of reptiles and amphibians.


In addition, on high mountain peaks such as Ngoc Vil, Ngoc Tu Ba, Chu Mom Ray peak... are the habitats of many primate species and tree-dwelling animals such as gibbons, langurs, rare birds such as hornbills, ground eagles, peacocks... Assessing the biodiversity of the National Park, the Chu Mom Ray National Park Management Board has actively contacted the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to develop projects on the conservation of valuable genetic resources.


When visiting Chu Mom Ray, tourists can also visit ethnic minority villages, get acquainted with the Hlang, Gia Rai, Ko Dong, Ro Mam or Bo Rau ethnic groups - one of the ethnic groups with the smallest population in the large family of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. Tourists will rest in airy communal houses or communal houses, enjoy Central Highlands dishes such as bamboo rice, wine, salt pounded with herbs, specialties of the local people.


The development of ecotourism routes in Chu Mom Ray National Park is closely linked to the tourism development policy of Kon Tum province.
